5 stars max (20 apps per star)? Can that be re-thought maybe? Way more apps than 100. I am already working on my 7th star....

Sorry you are going to have to give back all the work you have done on the 6th and 7th stars since you haven't earned your 5th yet. :-)

Seriously congratulations that is diversified work. I have not been pushing things too much, but do have one host attached to most active projects with about half the subprojects selected, and am just at 89 different apps.

The Badges listing has a problem with the totals needed for a Badge.

From where you reach 1 Emerald Badge and 1 Gold Badge, the value for Gold shows 40. This should be 20. And every Gold value after that point is incorrect.

Badge Colour ------ 100h 250h 500h 1000h 2500h

Emerald + Gold___ ------ -------- 40 ---------- 20 (This would be Emerald + 2 Gold) (needing 40 apps 500 hours and 20 apps 2,500 hours)

Should be

Emerald + Gold___ ------ -------- 20 --------- 20 (This is 1 Emerald + 1 Gold) (needing 20 apps 500 hours and 20 apps 2,500 hours)

I checked from this point down and Gold is incorrect every time.
Above this point Gold is correct.

I can't even get to 100 App's, how the heck are you working on your 7'th Star already which there is no 7'th Star by the way ... :P ... I looked at the Projects your running and I'm pretty much running the same Projects with all sub App's selected and only have 93 App's. Which 5 or 6 of them are Projects that hardly ever have work so I don't expect they will ever reach any significant amount of Hr's here at WUProp ...

So far, I have worked with 127 different apps (since we started counting).

If you look here. there are 172 apps that have been active in the last 24 hours. And the count is just going to go up with new projects.

There are a lot of projects with multiple apps. Sometimes you need to un-select the apps that you already have done work for, in order to force getting the apps that have a lower priority at the project.

I do that, not that it does any good in most of the Projects. A lot of those App's listed aren't listed in your Project Preferences, so it's a hit and miss thing for a lot of them.

That list of apps isn't the list that is used for badges!
If it was you could simply edit app_info and rename your apps repeatedly.
That list contains Application Versions. So for example app_v1.0 and app_v1.01 would be the same app and same research, just a different release version (with one less bug or something).

I am pretty sure that *is* the list of apps (with activity in the last 24 hours). It does not include version numbers. It just so happens that a few of the app names contain version numbers. But that is different from the actual version number field on the server. For example, VGTU. They just changed the app version from 1.18 to 1.19. In the past day, I (and others) have returned tasks for both versions. Yet the list shows only a single VGTU app.

Finally got 100 App's on the Board but am going to have to get more as some are Projects that hardly ever have work or very very little at best. I picked up a few App's from some Projects that hadn't sent me those [particular App's yet ... :)

I've barely managed to find 13 apps of the 20 I need for a 3rd star, but I'm fussy what I crunch for so it's not easy. Between 2 and 4 of those apps are dead, 5 are SLinCA, 2 are Climate runs, none are over 50h and just one has significant Pending hours.

Further up I'm seeing the same issues; of my 3 highest silver apps that I want to promote to gold, 2 aren't sending out work (one project is finished, one suspended) and the other is a GPU app that's prone to failures, and I only run that one occasionally, when I can babysit (I only have one ATI GPU).

BTW I got ~40K credits for the IBERCIVIS work I did; 173,877 4,059
Maybe they turned the validator on for a while after most of the tasks were back?
- at present they are not sending work and the validator is off again.

If your going to be fussy with the Projects you run then getting to 100 App's is going to be very hard. I look at it this way, if BOINC lets them into BOINC then I'll run it, at least for a little bit if nothing else just to get it on the Board.

So far I haven't heard of any Earth Shattering News for any Project that's made some sort of Miracle Discovery that's going to save Millions of lives. So I run them as the New Projects come out just to give them some support for awhile anyway.

The ibercivis Project did release some Drug liberation simulations at the nanoscale Wu's yesterday, may still have some I don't know. I got a bunch of them but had to abort a lot of them because they were going to run longer than the Project projected them to run. They started out at less than 1/2 Hour running time but now have gotten to over 20 hours & still running for some of the Wu's ...

There are only 8,760h in a year. So crunching 100,000h to get a blue star for projects that you don't value is a bit too much for me.
I'm not saying I object to others doing this, just that I won't be.

BOINC would let almost anybody run any sort of project. Mind you, even if Berkeley objected it just means it wouldn't appear on Boinc's template site lists and manager. The Cross-project statistics sites still credit such projects, as does here.

Many projects have made valuable contributions to science, medicine, industry and the environment. However, it's no longer normal for any research project to singularly make a massive impact, such as the discovery of the benefits of penicillin. Research results usually just increase understanding, which leads to better treatment strategies, rather than a pop-a-pill cure. The concept of 'saving lives' is better applied to firefighters.
Project value is difficult to assess and trying to is vastly more subjective than quantitative, but in my opinion finding another prime isn't up there with working out why a CRC drug only works in 85% of patients, or preventing the spread of malaria, even if there are 20 prime number apps to get you a shiny star.

WRT Ibercivis, I also aborted a pile of tasks because their run time rose from very short to several days, but also because they don't maintain a forum to ask what's going on. You might think Boinc would require this as a minimum standard for a project, but no.

These new badges seem pretty cool - we don't have to be a 1M+/day cruncher to be able to earn something. It is nice to earn a little something to go with the contribution to science, such as it might be! :D

How about a second badge, for stars number six through 10?

You could have two(2) circles side by side joined at the middle with the same star arrangement, this would give eight(8) possible stars.

* * *
(*)(*) This may give you a rough idea?
* * *

The hours needed could also be added to above 5,000 hours with 7,500 and 10,000 if that was what people wanted.
But adding additional stars would be a challenge to complete all by itself.

80 applications alone is a challenge for me, let alone 100+, but foe some there is definitely a need.

Getting 100 5000 Hr App's will be a serious challenge for anyone, mainly because many of the App's are short run App's and if you don't get 5000 Hrs when it's released you'll never get it.

I have some App's in the 3500-4000 Hr Range but haven't seen any more work for the App in a long time & may never see any more work for it/them. So those App's are stuck there unless more work is released for them.

This may have been addressed already, but regarding GPU apps - what "time" measurement is the WUProp app counting, exactly? There's the full "computation time," but there's also "CPU time," the latter of which is 98,5% of the time considerably lower than the actual runtime of a task!

I somehow find it a bit hard to believe I've done only ~1.150h of computation at Collatz since this new WUProp app release, but then again I may be misjudging the amount of time that's elapsed since.

I also have no way of determining this myself since at present all my GPUs are either broken or installed in machines that are down for maintenance "until further notice." =/

Possibly the Level of Hr's needed to get a Star needs to be raised, as CPU & GPU Performance increases getting 5000 Hr's on a App will be easier & easier:

Maybe something like this would be better for now anyway:

Bronze 1000 Hr's
Silver 5000 Hr's
Gold 10000 Hr's
Emerald 25000 Hr's
Sapphire 50000 Hr's

Now those Levels would be something to accomplish, at least with today's CPU & GPU Performance ... Adding more Stars is also something to consider, but at time goes on more & more App's would be run as they became available & you would have to keep adding Stars ... You could also increase the Number of App's needed to get a Star say to 50 App's Per Star/Level, so there's many different ways to acknowledge the amount of App Work done by people other than just adding more Stars ...
