New NumberFields app coming soon:
https://numberfields.asu.edu/NumberFields/forum_thread.php?id=338#1993

In the coming days we will be introducing a new number field application. This one will target degree 7 fields (called septics). The current best bound is 5E6, and this app will increase that to 200E6. This means it will find all degree 7 fields whose discriminant is bounded by 200E6.

Here is some additional information:
1. This search is expected to run for only 5 to 6 months (but could take longer).
2. It will run side-by-side with the current decic app.
3. It will only support the 64bit Windows and 64 bit Linux platforms.

I've been running a bunch of wu's for this new NumberFields app. Seems fairly stable, hopefully will be added here soon.

The DistributedDataMining project is shutting down!

Dear ddm users,
we had a good run during the last years and the computing power which you provided enabled many researchers to achieve there scientific goals.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to invest as much time as I wanted into maintaining the ddm project and although the BOINC client was working fine most of the time, the page had more and more problems which were not addressed properly. I was thinking about shuting down the project many times but there was never the right moment.

Recently, this changed when a critical vulnerability of the Drupal content management system was publicly announced. Since the ddm website was running an old version of Drupal, no fix is available for this issue. As a consequence, I took the website down. There are no indications that the vulnerability was exploited. The actual BOINC server is running on a different machine and would not have been effected anyway.

I had the choice between (1) updating to the latest Drupal version including the time consuming re-integration of all the BOINC features and (2) shutting down the project for good. I decided that this is the right moment to let it come to an end. I simply do not have the time to operate the project in the way that you would deserve.

From now on, no new workunits will be generated. The remaining units will be distributed to the BOINC clients and the incomming results will be processed as usuall. The BOINC statistics which are frequently crawled by multiple websites will stay online for a while, so that your credits won't be lost.

Thank you for your understanding and all your support during the last years.

Best regards,
Nico

Now that the new collaz is running, any thoughts on combining the hours, or is it intended to keep them separate?

POGS is complete

Hey everyone,

As a lot of you noticed, there haven't been any workunits for POGS for about a week.

I've been told by Kevin this morning that POGS has finished processing all the galaxies he needs.

Next up, we'll be looking at reviewing all of the processed galaxy data and preparing it for actual use.

Kevin tells me that the next step is to use the processed galaxy data to train an auto-encoder neural network to classify galaxies based on their features. We'll have a gigantic amount of training data ready for this task, so the prospects of positive results seem high.

Additionally, any research papers that ICRAR publishes using this data will contain an acknowledgement to the work done by everyone who contributed to POGS.

The POGS and theSkyNet websites are going to remain up for the time being, but Kevin is also looking to shut them down once everything has fully wrapped up. This is mainly due to monetary issues - it costs more than $2,000 AUD per month to keep the POGS and theSkyNet services running.

So I'm sorry about how abrupt this is, but we're all done. Thank you everyone for your contributions, great or small. Kevin and I do appreciate everything you've done, and we'll be sure to put all the data to good use.
I'm glad to have been able to help manage this project, even if it's only been one day a week for the most part. The community here has always been a good one.

I can try and answer any questions anyone has in this thread - I'm sure there'll be some.

Thanks again for everything,
Sam

Duchamp / Sourcefinder shutting down

Hi Everyone,

So some bad news today. Kevin was recently talking with a few of the higher ups at ICRAR, and it's been decided that Sourcefinder is to be shut down along with POGS.

I've also received word that the the scientists no longer need the data that's been crunched by Sourcefinder. I find extremely unfortunate considering the amount of time and effort that both all of you and myself have put into this project over the last few years, but that's just the way it is.
It would've been nice to have been notified about this sooner, but sometimes that doesn't happen.

We'll still keep a store of everything that's been computed by Sourcefinder, because we may be able to find a use for it in the future.

I should also mention that within ICRAR there's a pretty heavy shift away from distributed computing methods such as BOINC, toward simply utilising the increasing processing power of supercomputers. With this in mind, it's fairly unlikely that ICRAR will be looking to start up any new distributed computing projects in the near future.

Regardless, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to Sourcefinder. I appreciate everything you've done to help out on this project, especially considering how rocky a lot of it has been. I'm just sorry that we now don't have an immediate use for all of the data you've processed.

As with the POGS shutdown thread, I'll try to answer any questions anyone has.

Sam

Well, this is a bit strange to me.
The new apps-thread some hours ago said:
"The application Distributed Hardware Evolution Island from project Distributed Hardware Evolution Project is active".
I searched for the project and found it pretty quickly, URL seems to be: http://dhep.ga/
However, the whole site doesn't mention BOINC wherever I look and is speaking about downloading an own client. Adding the URL to BOINC obviously doesn't work and there is no possibility of account creation on the site itself.
So how come that WUProp is detecting it and even counting over 60 work units over at the active projects page of the last 24 hours?
Does anyone knows more about it (who's already running it probably)?

I saw it too. I setup the program per the instructions but it seems to have been at a higher level than my OS. I couldn't see any exe running but it was using 100% CPU and wasn't playing nice with BOINC tasks that were still running. I just uninstalled it as I couldn't see any other way to stop the service.

Edit: I see some advertising posts on several BOINC team forums. It's not a BOINC project per the admin

Also what is Attic Proxy Project I see on the free-dc missing apps page?

That's a very old project which never really got to run as far as I know.

Hehe great, thanks for that!
Somehow that was just too obvious. Some projects use a BOINC subdirectory as well.

the DHEP boinc project is alpha right now. Though the original project was around many years ago in a non BOINC form (and still is available like that)

BOINC version is only just getting off the ground, so lots of things need fixing.

Lucky one, as one with a farm you obviously could get work there while others like me probably not. I don't even have the project in my apps list...
The Wiki of my team's page says the URL was http://mishra.lpds.sztaki.hu/atticproxy/, but obviously there's nothing there at the moment.
Also I don't even have it in my Excel sheet project list so it somehow must have slipped through my view which is unusual but in 2012 (where it seems to have existed) I wasn't yet such a sharp app hunter. ;-)
Really wondering why this is popping up now over at the Free-DCs missing app page, maybe gets revived under another URL?

Thank you.

I've seen hours show up for Attic Proxy Project for over a week on Free-DC apps w/o hours page. They've gone down and up so it was more than a 1 time hours from an old WUProp task.

It even shows up as an inactive project for Ste\/e with 24 hours.

Btw, Quantum Chemistry is active and is working better now.

Not so much a Farm anymore, I made the decision awhile ago to cut back & donated most of my box's to another BOINCer. I'm down to 4 boxes now with 2 of them being Laptops so a Mini Farm at best for me now ... :)

I saw that myself, I have no idea why I showed hr's, I was showing some hr's at a couple other projects that I wasn't running either, I'm clueless as to why they showed hr's because I wasn't running them, that happens every now & then where I get hr's but don't run the projects ... Weird

Weekly hours went up another WUProp task to 29.68 hours.

Some have reported hours for projects they've never signed up for.
