If you are running ARM 7 or 8 there is a new BOINC BETA version for Androids up on the Play Store. If you wish to sign up to be a BETA tester.

Reference information on how to sign up to be a BETA tester is at
https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7003180

I have been running it since about October 28th 2018 and it has been stable for me.

O.K, looks to be working just fine. Only spotted 3 differences, Work units are now in alphabetical order by project, they where somewhat random on the old version. Secondly , instead of the 3 bars to switch from tasks to projects, preferences, etc there is now an arrow and thirdly a comma has been added to your credits so instead of for example 40000 you now have 40,000, nice touch. I'll get to "updating" my other Androids all of which look to be Arm V7 over the next few days.

Ok once you start doing more ARM unit upgrades it will be interesting to see if the upgraded BOINC app gives you any more credits per day.

Thanks

Pete in looking at your active computers you defiantly have a sizable farm of Android units. And you have really attacked the application upgrade project that you said you were going to do.

Do you have any updates on operation to share ?

Thanks

Yes, I have a large farm of Androids, mostly cheap 4 core's and 2 cores plus one 8 core unit. I was running up a massive electric bill using 20+ PC's so when I discovered that Androids could crunch I switched to them. I also keep a few laptops and 3 PC's running, cut my electric bill in half. Clearly, I don't get anything like the credits I used to get but at least it keeps my score ticking over. I've now upgraded all of my Androids to the Beta version. Just a couple of comments, first, YoYo won't run on Android 8.0 or 8.1, no idea if it ran before the upgrade to 7.4.11 though. Secondly, I've had no crashes so far although to be fair the other version didn't crash all that often. Haven't seen any real increase or decrease in credits so far. I run mainly WCG and one positive thing thing I have noticed is that Zika is no longer "sticking" to the same extent. I was having to reboot 3 or 4 Androids per day, now it's down to one a day. I also get sticking with Zika on my laptops as well. No other projects like Asteroids, Rosetta, YoYo display the sticking on Android problem.

Cheers,

Pete

Ok interesting on the YoYo. I only have one Android on that project and it is a

Android
3.10.9-12390409 (Android 7.1.1)

Which has been steady on that project.

I'm currently going through all of the available Android projects to see what works and what doesn't. Apart from YoYo I've discovered that Moo Wrapper doesn't work with Android 8 either. The ones that do work with Android 8 are WCG and WUProp. Asteroids and Rosetta also work but new tasks are hard to come by. I'll get around to Collatz, Seti, etc in the next few days or weeks!

Cheers,

Pete

Under Android 8.1 SETI@home (MB or AP) doesn't work and neither does MilkyWay.
WCG (as a backup project for all my devices) and WUprop do work fine.

Are you posting back to the BOINC Android Forum this same information. It would be quite helpful.

Will do. I'm really looking for an Android project that has a constant supply of work. WCG matches this but my cheap Androids only have 4gb of memory and Zika quite often sticks due to lack of memory, a reboot and clearing of the cache sorts it out for a few days but its quite time consuming to find out which Androids are affected. I also have a few tablets and some decent phones which have 8 or 16gb which run WCG Zica just fine. I have no problem with Asteroids on all versions of Android but the project is too unreliable (no new work for a week now). Rosetta has a bigger memory footprint so can't really run that plus the fact that work is very difficult to come by. Right now I'm running Moo Wrapper which does seem to be what I'm after! Some other things I've noticed, the currently off line Goofxygrid won't run on Android 7 or 8.1 but will run on 8.0. I have run Universe in the past but there hasn't been any work in months and I can't get work from collatz either.I also considered YoYo but some tasks take a crazy amount of time.

Cheers,

Pete

Ok in addition to the projects that you listed I am running Einstein and Universe

On YoYo all that I am running is Cruncher OGR which is like Moowrapper except for a different search problem.

Thanks

I forgot all about Einstein running on Android. I did a check on the Einstein site and found that I attached 2 Androids some time ago. One had no credit, the other on had around 1,000 credits. I am expecting to get a new battery for one of my better Androids sometime next week, it's been off line for a while and hasn't been updated to 7.4.1 so I'll do some experimenting with the old version before I install 7.4.1. I have in the meantime found some other possible issues (2 actually). These could be related to the Beta version of Boinc or machine specific. Get back to you on this.

Cheers,

Pete

Can confirm that Einstein runs on Android 8. The 2 possible problems are these. First, I only have the one Android that I use for making calls, this was recently updated from Android 7 to 8. Since I updated to 7.14.1, every time I make a phone call I'm unable to get back into Boinc, just keep getting the message you can only run one instance of Distributed software. pressing exit would normally fix this and next time you tried you could get in to monitor your work but it just loops the message and only a reboot can get you back into Boinc. Second problem is pausing a work unit...it pauses O.K but press green button to resume doesn't always work, in many cases the green button vanishes and there's no way to restart without a reboot.

I didn't think Milkyway provided an Android/ARM app... I thought you had to compile it yourself and use an app_info.xml file. I know NativeBOINC used an app_info.xml to get theirs to work.

Collatz removed Android/ARM from their app list. Most likely wasn't worth his time to maintain.

Edit: I also haven't seen the Android RakeSearch app mentioned above by mmonnin. I know Daniel made a Linux ARM app. mmonnin do you have the link? I'm assuming Android is what you meant since the OP was talking about BOINC for Android. If not, then please disregard.

Manual installation of optimized apps on Android is tricky, it can be done on rooted devices only. Because of this I did not create apps for Android.

I know that NativeBOINC app allows to install such apps. However it is no longer maintained. I did not check if it still work or not.

Thanks Daniel for clarifying. I typically have between 25 and 30 Android phones crunching at any given time. Please let us know if they ever do release one.
