1) Message boards : Number crunching : WUProp Have A New Project URL? 's' added to http. (Message 4814)
Posted 11 Mar 2017 by ChertseyAl

Before anyone says "You should be running the latest version anyway", that doesn't happen in reality. Looks like a lot of computers are still out of action judging by the drop, and sustained slump, in daily points added. Looks like a sustained 19% drop in points since the change. Nice one.

You need to upgrade to the latest BOINC version.

Shut down BOINC.
Install new version over the top (should do that by default).
REBOOT! Don't skip this stage.
And away you go.

You might not need to detach and reattach the project. If you do add the project again it takes ages (like 15 minutes) to actually connect again, so don't panic.

Took me ages to figure this out, it's a pity there isn't a sticky or a project announcement about it :(
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Why only 1 WU per machine (Message 2307)
Posted 20 Jul 2014 by ChertseyAl

If someone has 6, 8, or 12 CPUs, why not 6-12 WUs per machine?

Because you'd be measuring exactly the same thing multiple times :)

it will take me awhile to get 100 hours in 20.

Not really. You have 12 processors/cores, so you only need to run a project for a little over 8 hours on all cores to get 100 hours - That's about 3 projects per day, and with 10 projects to run to get your first badge it will only take three and a half days!

Still working fine here with BOINC 6.10.60, although there did seem to be a glitch earlier today.

6) Message boards : Number crunching : Why is WuPROP not on the list? (Message 1376)

To stop people cheating by running hundreds of VMs running nothing but WUProp :)

IIRC WUProp doesn't gather stats on itself as some people would creat a billion VMs running nothing but WUProp to gain huge amounts of utterly useless credit ;) So WUProp isn't a monitored application.

Anyway, the more I think about this, the more I like the idea. The badge is like Free-DC MegaMilestones, but in a handy, er, badge :)

I like that it is based on something other then points. This is a nice shift.

[much snippage]

Be grateful we now have badges or just don't focus on it. Were you unhappy running this project before badges were considered? If not, don't complain. This is just an added feature.

Concur. I've done as much 'badging' as I want to for now, and I've done as many milestones as I want to do.

I *do* like badges, but I see them as a bonus rather than a target. I'll never get a badge here, and I don't care :)

I can see why crunchers are obsessed by credit, rank, milesone, badges etc and that's fine. Any inducement is good for a project, and long may the crunchers chase them!

I would just say that Sebastien's sig project is awesome. He's done a lot of work to make the sigs and site so slick, so it's only fair that he gets to play with his own badge :)

9) Message boards : Number crunching : Wrong application under 'reported data' (Message 782)
Posted 21 Jan 2013 by ChertseyAl
I notice a new section on the 'your account' page for 'reported data'. I guess this is for the badge recently announced.

Unfortunately, the application listed for Quake-Catcher Network is "La Red de Atrapa Sismos" when in fact I'm running the ordinary QCN 7.29 application. Not a big deal, but just thought I'd mention it :)

Just a thought - does wuprop require that other projects are running on a PC in order to work?

Yes. What is it going to measure if there's nothing running but itself?

how about running multiple WU's, like freeHAL?
I get 1 NCI app from them for each core on my CPU, wouldn't that make the progress here a little faster?

No. You'd be measuring the same thing multiple times, and it would be a complete waste of time. Check on the main page what the purpose of this project is :)

12) Message boards : News : Bug in version 2.36 for Windows (Message 490)

The application slows down or blocks the network.

Arg! I spent hours yesterday trying to diagnose what was killing port 80 on one of my machines. Got as far as proving it was only happening when BOINC was running and then ran out of time. This morning everything was back to normal.

At least it's nice to know what was causing it :)
