I could definitely help with the administration part. I even have a place I could host it, but it's either just rotational HDD (but gigabit speeds) or much faster SSDs (but tens of megabits speeds). but I am a daily system engineer, managing a fleet of servers and software on them.

I had also read both in this thread and in the primegrid discord that multiple users had expressed interest and ability to keep the project running. Maybe one of those users is capable of doing what work that you are not.

Transfering WUProp on an other server will be difficult :
- Some data as email addresses are private. I can't transfer them to someone without user acceptance. Only hours could be transfered. Users should register on the new server.

I am not sure how to handle this. Perhaps something could be done that if the user can export their data from the server here and upload/import the data into a new server. This provided you can leave the site functional for users to be able to do this as this could take some time. Not everyone will know of this.

I can volunteer to check in on this from time to time to help alleviate the load of one person doing this.

I understand Sebastien's reluctance about the email addresses but I personally as a User do NOT get to see all the other Users email addresses, but as an Admin Sebastien can I think, but if a new Admin was to take over then transferring the drive WITH the email addresses shouldn't be a problem unless a specific user has a problem as after all they signed up for the PROJECT not with Sebastien as an individual. Yes I'm guessing some people knew it was Sebastien running the Project but I have never personally cared about that as after all it's about running as many of the new Projects as possible and getting badges in a new and different way than the 'normal' Boinc credit system. So assuming there was a process to 'opt out' before any disk handover it should almost be a plug and play and wuprop is back up and running just like a few days ago, just at a new location.

I was hopeful to at least reach maybe the 250,000 credit mark, but alas, it looks like this will not happen.

oops...my bad...I should have said 350,000 :-(

Hi all

Surely it would be quite simple to:

1) suspend the project for a few days
2) make a backup of the existing project (a)
3) then transfer it to a new server (b) and
4) restore the backup to the new server
5) minor tweaking to code to reflect a change of domain name (c)
6) BOINC users would then need to remove the project from BOINC Manager and then
7) Add the new project website address, and restart crunching
8) Maybe also backup all the messages in this forum and restore them to the new server

Of course a new admin plus "helper team" would be required to take over from Sebastiens role...but that should be fairly easy to do.

Notes:
(a)= So many projects have suffered crashes of hardware/hard drives in the past and then restored their systems, following repairs, using an existing backup.

(b)= of course the new server would need to be hosted by a "trusted" provider who can support the amount of bandwidth required to run the 24/7 operations of the project. This new server would also need to be paid for (or donated) by members of the BOINC community, maybe by a "crowd funding" scheme?

(c)= a few projects have, in the past, changed their domain names, so this is not a big problem to surmount.

regards
Tim

Please continue the project or at least let me upload my last wu's. (feeder not running)

Also the xml export seems to not work anymore, so please enable it again and give the stats sites some time to get our most recent credits. Thank you.

When the project is shut down, all the periodic processes, including the stats export, are automatically turned off.

Yes, that's why we both kindly ask to turn it on again for a day or two, so everyone can report their tasks and the stats sites can get the latest xlms after that. Basically extend the period with turned off work genarators while keeping the other processes on. There are still 4753 unreported WUs out there.

Thank you! It was fun while it lasted. Lately the only reason I was still running a few BOINC projects. With Wuprop ending, I am going to sign-off as well. But again, it was fun!

...
- someone which can spend an half hour each day to check and validate new projects, applications, gpu, cpu and android devices.
...

Hi

Do the projects change so quickly that they have to be checked every day? Wouldn't it be enough to check 1 or 2 times a month for known projects and additionally for new projects when it becomes known?

It would also be conceivable to divide the tasks among several people, who then only have to check a few projects.
I could do this for the two projects of Rechenkraft.net (yoyo & RNA World), if this does not require too deep programming knowledge.

As anybody, I'm sad to stop WUProp. For me, it'a a fail.
So, in a first time, I can re-enable the project with some users which will help me to manage the project (Mainly checking and validating new projects, applications, gpu, cpu and android devices. And perhaps coding a new version for android devices)[/list]

Thought there was a technical glitch causing WU's to report no hours and check in to find out.... to me, this is worse than losing SETI@Home. I LOVE collecting WUProp hours; it's better proof of my time and dedication to science crunching than credit. I proudly told people that my machines put in 100,000 hours to COVID19 research; they wouldn't understand credit to WCG.

Be clear that the work you do here matters and there should be a way to keep your dream alive, Sebastien.

Is 30GB Spectrum broadband enough bandwidth to handle the load?
Can it work on Dual Xeon 2660 v1's or would the server need at least V2?

I would be willing to donate let’s say €100 to whoever agrees to continue this project to help with the maintenance and electricity costs. Maybe others would help, too. I regard BOINC as one of my favourite hobbies. Until now I didn’t think much about the compassion, the hard work and the money project owners have to invest to make it happen. So if I can contribute I’d love to.

We have a group together to TRY to take over and run it, but we're waiting to hear from Sebastien on feasibility/process/etc.

Don't give up all hope!

Anyone else have an idea how much this project benefits the entire BOINC ecosystem?

Am I on base in this post?

http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/forum_thread.php?id=162&postid=8808

I think the entire project ecosystem benefits from the sheer number of cores WUProps hunters can steer to new WU's, returning projects or new projects.

Their funding does not last forever and needs to be renewed based on their success. WUProps start/stop thread, and the desire for badge hours, sends fresh blood and forges a path to these projects. Projects should see WUProps continuation as an investment in their likely success.

I see Sebastien's work here as something that should be rewarded by the served projects; enough that it's decent income for Sebastien.

Anyone have data and ability to prove/disprove my conjecture?

Maybe if there is a gridcoin address, we can sidestake some coins. I would do!

And please let the old wu's be uploaded and certified. Deadline for my WU's is 16.03

I've been using this project for over a decade and I really hope it will continue to work. Thank you to all of you who have put in the effort for this.

In the l'AF forum Sebastien has mentioned (in the public part of the forum) that PrimeGrid project admins have contacted him and proposed to take over the project.

Personally I think it is a great news that qualified admin(s) of a well-known boinc project express such an interest.

Hopefully a solution is found, I'm crying without my hours to stars !

Also let's not forget that WUProp is not only about stars, it's a wonderful technical database to have precious information on boinc ecosystem. And the fact that it gives stars encourages crunchers to attach their machines to boinc, and therefore feed the DB with up-to-date data all the time. It's a very clever positive feedback loop.
