1) Message boards : Number crunching : Project Link is Not Working (Message 596)
Posted 20 Jul 2011 by Profile Sorceress
I am having trouble with split CPID's and I trying to resolve the issue. On the projects with the alternate CPID, the link for WUProp@Home is not working yet I can link from the manager, BOINCStats and various other sites. The stats showing are correct are but the link is broken. Could this be the cause of my problem? WUProp@Home is showing the correct CPID so why is it showing a broken home link on the alternate CPID sites? It's confusing me too LOL

Could you fix the 'your account' button on the BOINC manager to open the 'my account' page instead of the 'my account data' page, as it should? They are two different pages. I'd appreciate it. TIA

Consider yourself lucky you that you never ran an Orbit work unit for 12 days and then have it come up invalid.

I ran 3 Orbit Wu and all three crashed. Must be Orbit's std MOD. They're off my radar for that. lol.

1)I would like to see a more accurate accounting of the number of participants and hosts the projects have. And an averaging of the number of participants/hosts that leave/ join over a set period of time, say per week. Most of the stat boards estimates are extremely inflated and inaccurate.

2) An average of the credits each projects pays per WU would be nice too. With all the projects trying to follow the ridiculous cross project parity ideal, it would help deciding which project is worth attaching to.

3) As mentioned already, information as to how often a project has work or how often its up or down (like SETI, uFluids, Pirates, etc) is are excellent tools in decision making.

Low pay, low host count, how many leave/join a project, and how often its down or out of work, would seem more useful information in choosing whether a project is WORTH attaching to than any other. IMHO. These are the areas I look at when making my decisons. They are also a good indications as to how a much a project may value its participants.

Would you add a 'Server Staus' link to the Home page?

Credits per day are the same as QCN.
I think it is adequate.

What is QCN?
10) Message boards : Science : What data collects this project? (Message 265)

Ok, that clarifies a few issues I was curious about. I am a bit cautious of projects that would collect data from user computers or use volunteer computers to process mathematical data that may be used in the encryption fields. Prime number algorithyms are use extensively in the encryption fields to protect or invade 'sensitive' information. As I mentioned, hackers are taking advantage of every avenue they can find to exploit that information. They could easily use distributed computing to that end.

I appreciate your time to enlighten me.

I am curious to know what value this information has? For what purpose? And to who? It has no value to me that I can see (as a user) or am I missing a point? It also seem that once sufficient data is collected and the project's goals are met, it will terminate. Which may accure rather quickly as I see it. (That question was asked earlier by Tristesire in Mar without a reply).

As a side note, I wonder if this data collection is from 'public domain' sources or is it collected from user HD's?? Aren't most of the WU processing initated by command .exe programs? Once inside your computer, could the program be used to collect data (any?) from you systems. Hackers are extremely active and potent these days, as we all know. While I believe this project to be on the up-n-up, we cannot be too careful. Please enlighten me on these matter.

Sebastien,

I would think that as 6.11.x is in beta testing. it might be prudent to continue with the current apps until 6.11.x is released to the public. Designing apps to run on the beta may be a waste of time. Many things will change as the bugs are worked out. I know many users like to keep up with the current upgrades but you can be asking for troubles (as is stated in the disclaimer). I would prefer to have work for my computer and wait til the beta is released to the public to see if any changes are needed. Just my $.02 worth
