I crunched a few units, very few and very quick. Not sure it's ready for public consumption at all..

Please tell us how you found it

And please tell us where it is

I want to join you on 13 :)

Not very "reliable" then is it?

From time to time I receive RSS feeds that a certain project is active. The problem is that I either can not find information about the project (?New) or the project has retired more than 12 months ago and the website is no longer active.

The latest such info is about a projecct called Reliable. Where do I find info on this project? If at all possible, it would be appreciated if the link to the sites be listed weather it is current, new or old.

OK. I just read some info posted by other menbers about this project. The problem still exist. Why are we sent an RSS without a URL. Is it just for a few priviledged users that have some prior knowledge than if that is so, why are we not being told about the URL?

Keep on crunching and have a nice day...

I'm also wondering on several applications on the result page. IMHO some of the projects are no longer active but still listed here. Exampes are

  • BealF@Home Beal Engine (red, but on result page)
  • OProject@Home ALX (red, but on result page)
  • EDGeS@Home Riemann Zeta Research Project and
  • EDGeS@Home Autodock VINA (both black, not on result page, Domain http://home.edges-grid.eu/home/ for sale)

You can rely on it being unavailable!

Yup, looks like this project was a day-fly, been on track with it since then, but it doesn't show up anymore. :-\

However, a new app came out instead on Albert@home, which is not yet in the stats:
Gamma-ray pulsar binary search #1

It's already been on the Board, they just haven't been running any of them ...

CMS-dev is ending as a standalone project. CMS Simulation App is moving (already there) to vLHC.

Warning! Don't know how they'll eventually do it at vLHC, but at CMS-Dev, there was a limit of 1 WU at a time, and each WU ran for 24 hours, _not_ NCI. CPU use varied from 0 to 100% randomly within that 24 hours. Network traffic (non-BOINC, their own from within VirtualBox) was constant and sometimes very heavy; as in saturated my DSL uplink running 5 hosts, resulting in errors. WUs can fail if network unavailable, even for a few minutes, and sometimes if they are just swapped out by BOINC, or the host is rebooted, or the VBox image gets corrupted. (In which case all following WUs will also fail, until you reset the project.) You didn't know if a WU failed though, unless an administrator told you, or you looked at the logs. Credit (low) was a fixed amount per WU regardless of work done - even if it failed, since they don't report end status to BOINC, just continue running until the 24 hours is up. A few times a WU got "stuck" and continued running (days) until manually aborted, in which case there was no credit. AFAIK, none of these problems have been solved.

Early reports from those on vLHC (I'm not, I'm giving up on this one, at least for now) show that running more than one WU simultaneously (allowed there, at least the first few days) can require over 6GB RAM, and since it's VBox, it doesn't play nice with others - locks up host if you run out of RAM, ignores BOINC preferences. I would guess that you could saturate your uplink bandwidth with a single host, too. They are still "beta", even though they've moved to vLHC, so they're still working on the problems. They DID say (in message boards) that this app is only for those who crunch 24/7 and can dedicate a core to CMS - don't know if that warning got carried over. Run at your own risk...

Bill... vLHC has been running CMS-dev work for a while. vLHC is probably the best running of all the virtualbox projects right now and has probably been the largest contributor to integrating with BOINC. It wasn't until recently that CMS-dev announced that they were transitioning entirely soon. And I believe that vLHC limits it to 2 work units per host by default.

*Sigh*
Well, what is this project now:
The application BMG at Home from project BMG@Home is active"

I've tried to search for it everywhere again but couldn't find it... either I'm really bad at this or it hides itself again under a not so easy to find URL.
I would really appreciate it if the link to the projects would be included in this posts. Can this be done please, Sebastien?

I've asked for this before. Surely it's not too much to ask?

In the meantime, I suspect someone here knows where it is.

You have to know the secret location where people "in the know" post about new projects NOT to be disclosed to outside parties due to the fact that the project(s) might be considered in the "pre-alpha" stages; they DO NOT want massive number of users overwhelming their server(s) and/or have NOT given permission to publicly disclose the project URL and export the stats to the general public.

EDIT... BTW... there is a post about BMG@home seeking volunteers over at the BOINC forums:

From the new/intermittent applications thread:
The application ALX from project OProject@Home is active

and the active projects list says:

OProject@Home ALX 3

Well, this is a little surprise... The homepage of OProject doesn't exist anymore since months and there weren't even ALX-wus in the last year the project was still alive AFAIK.
So how can this be now? Was there some host turned on which slept for years, having WUprop reported old ALX tasks on it? Unbelievable... :-D

As stated before there are some projects that test before going live. The project was stressed on the hardware it was on and needed upgrading. The admins took it down with kind of a promise that it would return soon. Well then it went MIA. Even the URL went away.

I suspect they finally got some hardware and are background testing the programs on newer BOINC version before it is release back out in the wild. At least that can be a hope.
