I am very close to my first star, but I think it would be nice to have a badge for total work done... It could work a similar way - to get your bronze star for it, you would need to crunch the equivalent to a 5 star normal bronze badge (so 100 hours and 100 applications - 10,000 hours), etc. I have this proposal because a fair few people are crunching a lot on WUProp, but only for several projects, so aren't crunching enough apps to get them recognized by means of a badge - if someone could look in to this idea for me, that would be great! So, the whole badge system would go like this: Bronze: 100 hours x 100 apps = 10,000 Hours Silver: 250 hours x 100 apps = 25,000 Hours Gold: 500 hours x 100 apps = 50,000 Hours Ruby: 1,000 hours x 100 apps = 100,000 Hours Emerald: 2,500 hours x 100 apps = 250,000 Hours Sapphire: 5,000 hours x 100 apps = 500,000 Hours Magenta: 10,000 hours x 100 apps = 1,000,000 Hours Lime: 25,000 hours x 100 apps = 2,500,000 Hours Cyan: 50,000 hours x 100 apps = 5,000,000 Hours Purple: 100,000 hours x 100 apps = 10,000,000 Hours Thank you for considering this idea. |

I just had a similar thought. My version would place the circle/stars badge on a colored background in place of the normal white we have now. We could use your ranks scheme as it stands with the just the background color changing. The one thing I would like to see changed from your idea is to drop the number of apps required. I would want this to reflect a total of hours and not have anything to do with number of apps. The number of apps is already covered in the requirements to get each star so no need to do it again. |

I'd like a second (and third and fourth etc) badge as suggested in other threads |

Hi, Khali - the background idea sounds good - is what your'e suggesting that we keep our badge, but according to total hours have a different background? And it isn't the number of apps - I used those numbers to make it equivalent, i.e. to get a 5 star bronze badge ( ), you need a total of 10,000 hours at least, so the total hour badge/background could be the same amount of hours, if you get what I'm trying to say... (I have a feeling I have over complicated it). |

Hi, Steve - that sounds like a good idea, too - just looked at your account, for example, and you have over 180 apps that are eligible for a badge - therefore, 80 of the apps you have crunched for aren't being credited on your badge... I'll PM Seb with the ideas we have so far now :D EDIT:Just sent Seb a PM with our ideas - just waiting for a reply - I'll tell you what he says - in the mean time, if you have any more ideas for new badges, please post them. |

if you have any more ideas for new badges, please post them. Badges for the total credits are also missing... ;-) While we could add a lot of different badges here, I also would like to see a second badge for more apps first. Thanks, DoctorNow - I'll mention the total credit one, but stress that we all want the extra badge asap |

Like I said in the badge upgrade thread, I think if people aren't willing to do the necessary work to get to 20 apps, they really aren't deserving of the badge. My reasoning is that the strength of this project is gathering a wide variety of information about all of the BOINC projects. someone putting in 10,000 hours into one project (which in some cases means 1 application) is really less valuable to the community as those numbers really aren't going to change that much compared to putting in 10,000 hours in a multitude of applications. Thus splitting up your CPU's time to get data on how it runs other projects is more valuable than a single app. Let's face it. First badge here can be acquired on a single core/single thread computer in less than 3 months run time. That really isn't that difficult. Factor in that the average mainstream PC is a dual or quad core these days and you cut that time down significantly. A dual core cell phone that costs <$10 (US) can knock out 14+ apps. I personally don't like just a total number of hours lumping all applications together because that doesn't show much justice to the value of the applications monitored. That just means you had one (or a hand full) of favorite apps and just let it ride. That also translates into the point whores that focus only on high rewarding projects will continue to gain high level badges as if they really contributed a lot to the BOINC community. Now, there isn't anything wrong with point whoring, but a badge that only shows that you had a CPU going is less valuable to me than the current star system. I would also worry about putting a colored background behind them as it may conflict with some of the stars colors as is. |

I'm with Colslaw. WUProp is all boinc projects. If you crunch 1000nds of hours on Seti then great for you and I applaud your dedication but ask Seti to recognise your contribution in a badge. WUProp is a stat application for all projects on Boinc, not a badge issuing project. |

I am in agreement with Coleslaw on this topic. The science behind this project is to understand how the variety of applications work across a variety of computers. Running a single app on an individual cpu for a billion hours adds virtually nothing to this project and shouldn't be "specially" rewarded. |

I'm also in agreement with Coleslaw. A "overall hours" badge is completely pointless here at WuProp. We already can see our total hours on our account page. The purpose/object of this project is to collect information about ALL the projects us volunteers run on our devices and their various applications -- VARIETY. It would be nice to have a 2nd badge for those that have exceeded or will possibly exceed the current 1 badge with 5 stars if the programming/logic is not too complex to implement. |

I know we CAN see our total hours, but it's like saying that a credit badge for, say Bitcoin Utopia, is useless just because you can see the total credit on your account page - I was thinking we could have this badge as another something to add to your signature. |

And we are saying we understand what you are asking. We are also saying that the meaning to that badge would be pretty low to most users as the badge would kinda be pointless in reflection to the purpose of the project. Those hours have nothing to do with WUProp where as your points badge from BU reflects the contribution directly to that project/sub project. I already have run time badges from WCG. They are broken down by sub project. That has meaning. A WUProp badge that says I ran 1,000,000,000 hours of BOINC project apps? Not much meaning to that considering some apps do absolutely nothing! Try running QCN on a system without a sensor. It sits in memory collecting badge time. What was so impressive about that? QCN has 8 projects. That is almost half a star. Throw those projects into multiple virtual machines and you can rac up tons of hours for those 8 apps and do absolutely nothing. You would also get WUProp credits which is kinda crappy. So, that is an easy way for someone who has contributed literally nothing to the BOINC world obtain this illustrious badge of yours. Is that fair? I say no. OProject had the ALX app that did nothing and could be exploited the same way. I'm sure there will be more... |

I agree with Coleslaw and others. This project has an agenda and that is to measure every other projects elapse times across the board. The badges here support that. It's easy enough to get a badge if you participate in multiple applications (several can be from the same project). The hours are already signified on the badges. Having an extra badge for hours seems silly to me. Some projects have no badges. Most projects have 1 type of badge for that project. There are a few that do multiple badges but they are done that way for more specific reasons. I say leave well enough alone. The only thing I'd like to see is adding a second start for people with over the 100 project point. I know there are a few people who could have 7 or 8 stars (or more). That would be a better use of badges than anything else that has been proposed. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

That is saying, I need to get 8 more up to the 100 mark that are currently sitting around 70-80 hours at the moment.... |

I forgot about the QCN thing, Coleslaw - I see the point that a badge like that could easily be exploited... And I do agree with the idea of more than one badge, and I have already PMed Seb with that topic. |

I do see the point, Coleslaw, but certain devices CAN'T crunch on a lot of projects - e.g. the only Projects that I have found that the Raspberry Pi are Enigma@Home, Asteroids@Home and Einstein@Home - some people may not have (or be able to get) a device that can crunch more projects, so they should get some form of recognition for either total credit, or total hours. I don't agree with this last part. Quite frankly if they can afford a RPi, they can afford a cheap cell phone that is more widely supported and just use it off of WiFi. PC's are tossed in dumpsters all the time. So, cost is nominal for the mass majority of volunteers. I can't see basing the argument off of looking for a very small potential sub set that happen to fit some very specific possibility. Edit: you can add Collatz to that list according to their apps page http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/apps.php A couple more options listed here: http://burdeview.blogspot.com/p/raspberry-pi-boinc-project-ive-created.html |

True, very true, but even so, some projects dont work on mobiles, and some sort of recognition (no matter how small), should be available for total hours, that can be displayed outside this website... |

If you only count 1 of the 8 QCN projects then there is at least 14 (active) apps for Android phones/tablets (unless QCN doesn't detect your accelerometer then subtract 1). Count all 8 of them, and you have 21. If you count WCG's BETA apps, then there is what... 2 more potentials? And just because "some" projects don't have Android doesn't mean much. Like I said, PC's are a dime a dozen. Choice is what is restricting people. I don't think we should cater to those unwilling to go the distance. It really isn't that tough to get to 20 apps with 100 hours each... Edit: Forgot to count Moo! (so adjusted the numbers) and I'm not really counting Yafu as it doesn't always seem to have work available. |
